Expert on water control and displacement.

From preventive emergency planning to specialized pumping issues

An international market leader, Van Heck has been operating in the field of water control and displacement for more than 50 years. "We are not only active in the dredging, salvage and offshore industry, but also supply pumping systems for civil works, sewer renovations and cooling water systems," says Willem Berends, technical manager at Van Heck. "And we draw up emergency plans," he adds. "It's all about thinking with and unburdening our relations."

"We can do more than is often asked," Berends continues. "Projects are increasingly dynamic, there are more often customized issues and we move with them to meet the client's specific needs." Among other things, Berends refers to nature, environmentally friendly and quiet solutions, remote operation/monitoring and meeting strict regulations.

Emergency Plan

Van Heck is often called in during emergencies. "As a result, we know very well what is needed and can respond appropriately. Increasingly, we draw up emergency plans for water boards, specifying for each location what is needed in case of calamities. To always be sure of a solution, we work out several scenarios that make a crisis manageable." Berends notes that (heavy) industry is also increasingly using Van Heck's expertise for an emergency plan. The investment for an emergency plan is only a fraction of the damage it prevents in the event of a calamity, he knows. "For example, we wrote an emergency plan for a gate terminal on the Maasvlakte. The LNG terminal is an important HUB for Europe and has strict regulations. Our engineers had to do quite a bit of homework, but ultimately laid down a good emergency plan. Because we took all the measurements, knew about the regulations and the exact pump arrangements, we were asked to put part of the emergency plan into action during a maintenance shutdown to maintain cooling capacity."

Specialist work

For every challenge, Van Heck has an appropriate solution. "Quieter, more energy-efficient, less CO2 emissions: we go through all the requirements with our customers and ensure that a high-quality pumping or siphoning system is put in place that falls within emission standards." Van Heck is currently working for client Bunte on the A26/A7 section in Germany, over a length of about 8 km. Near a nature reserve, there are three electrically driven pumps in series to drain the return water. "The fully automatic pump spread with PLC control enables our engineers to monitor remotely and set the capacity optimally where necessary. In addition, maintenance intervals can be determined and scheduled which reduces downtime," said Berends, concluding, "Together we choose the best solution."
