No less than 1 million tons of clay will be supplied by contracting company J. den Boer to reinforce the Gorinchem-Waardenburg dike section. This is not just any clay, but special dike clay. "A beautiful natural product that we also apply in a sustainable way."
First, a brief introduction of the contracting company J. den Boer. The company has been active in civil engineering for almost 60 years. They are specialists in large earthmoving projects and related disciplines, think transshipment and transport, recycling, contracting and the supply of clay. "At various locations in the Netherlands we have deposits of clay for civil engineering applications, such as raising and reinforcing dikes," explains Marinus Robbemondt. "In total, we currently have a stock of 2 million cubic meters of dike clay. We have extracted this clay from the Over de Maas and Geertjesgolf de-sanding projects, among others. From there we can supply different types and classes of clay, right down to ceramic clay. Because of our versatility, we can also take care of the complete logistics around the clay supply: extraction, transport by road and/or water and processing in the dike body. We own several loading and unloading pontoons to quickly transfer large quantities of construction and raw materials. For the execution of projects, we use Dutch inland waterways as supply and discharge routes as much as possible. Our loading and unloading pontoons are designed so that large quantities of materials can be delivered or removed efficiently on site. This enables us to limit CO2-emissions."
The clay that J. den Boer supplies is so-called dike clay. This clay meets a number of properties, such as a sand content of less than 40 percent, a lutum content of roughly between 10 and 50 percent and an organic matter content of less than 5 percent. In addition, erosion resistance is an important requirement. The dike clay for the Gorinchem-Waardenburg section has an erosion class 1 and 2, which means it is highly to very highly erosion resistant. "To guarantee this quality, we have drilling and research carried out by Fugro. The clay is delivered in accordance with the requirements of the Soil Quality Decree (Bbk) and under our BRL 9335-2 certificate."
J. den Boer has been involved in this dike reinforcement since the tender phase. "We are proud that we, as a company for the Waalensemble, are allowed to realize this work and that we are making an important contribution to the water safety of the Netherlands with our dike clay."
