Ever since its founding in 2015, High Five Solutions has been active in sonically drilling ground anchors on dike reinforcement projects in the Netherlands. With eight years of experience and further development of the technique, sonically drilled ground anchors are now a mature product on the Dutch foundation market. Even at construction consortium Mekante Diek, the technique and its advantages have not gone unnoticed. It therefore forms the basis for a cooperation between H5S and Mekante Diek on the dyke reinforcement Tiel-Waardenburg.
As partner for the anchoring, H5S contributes in different areas to the safe, qualitative and therefore successful execution of the dyke reinforcement Tiel-Waardenburg. Since 2021, H5S has been involved in preparing the project by sharing knowledge and providing input during the DO design and testing the feasibility of this design. "After completing this phase, work started on the execution design and further work preparation," says Timo Gijbels of H5S. "This all takes place in the keet of Mekante Diek and Waterschap Rivierenland in Varik where a positive atmosphere and good cooperation are paramount."

On this project, the decision was made to use self-drilling grout injection anchors. "A total of about 2,500 anchors need to be installed to stabilize the sheet pile walls being installed in the dike," Timo explains. "Taking into account 100 years of service life and all safety requirements, the anchor rods are in the heavier segment. Using the sonic technique, it is no problem to install these anchors in hard soil layers. In addition, environmental influences such as vibrations and settlements are kept to a minimum thanks to the soil displacement technique. Another advantage relates to the environment. Thanks to the sonic technique, anchors can be applied using less energy and less cement consumption. This allows us to use raw materials economically and limit emissions released when performing this type of work."

The equipment used on this project by H5S is equipped with Tier 4 final engines. In addition, all machine operators have taken the "the new turning" course to further increase awareness in the area of resource efficiency.

The anchors on this project are installed both from the front of the sheet piling and also "over the head. "With the latter, the machine drills under itself, so to speak. An advantage of our HFS sonic drill rig machines is that they can be used for both of the above methods. The supply of different machines is therefore not necessary and this reduces the number of transport movements," says Timo. "An additional advantage is that our large drilling machines are equipped with a modular drilling leader. If a sheet pile needs to be installed close to a tree or a house, a shorter broker can still be used to work past the object. Where there is sufficient space, we use the long leader with 6-meter-long anchor rods. This saves torque bushings (material) and enables us to work faster."
By involving H5S as a partner, Mekante Diek can count on the enthusiasm, commitment and solution orientation that so characterizes our employees, says Timo and concludes, "In doing so, all parties involved on this project put the safety and health of all employees and local residents first. A project to be proud of!"
