Energy authority Peter Molengraaf (ex-CEO Alliander) on Lievense | WSP concept

"Plan hydrogen buffer is interesting, creative and potentially valuable"

Buffering sustainably generated energy and making it available for later use is a burning issue in the energy transition. In response, Lievense | WSP has developed an ambitious plan for large-scale storage of sustainably produced hydrogen, for the benefit of the area between Rotterdam and Antwerp. According to energy authority Peter Molengraaf, former CEO of Alliander and chairman of Netbeheer Nederland, the plan has potential to make a significant contribution to making our energy system more sustainable.

Hydrogen buffer necessary and feasible

With minimal impact on the environment, create a green hydrogen buffer good for the energy needs of a medium-sized city. And that in the heart of an urban-industrial region of stature. Simple, fast and at relatively low investment. That is the perspective of Lievense | WSP's hydrogen storage plan. The proposal is to build four pipelines for hydrogen storage, each with a diameter of 120 cm. With a total length of 160 kilometers, these will connect Rotterdam and Antwerp and the intervening industrial clusters and cities. Site of action: LSNed's pipeline street, which has long been specifically designated as a pipeline street, so the shovel can go into the ground tomorrow, so to speak.

Important (secondary) role for sustainable molecules

In order to gauge how people think about this concept and what steps need to be taken to make it concrete, Lievense | WSP is talking to experts from the market and society. Such as energy authority Peter Molengraaf. He thinks that cheap renewable energy from sun and wind, which is available in abundance, will determine the future of the energy landscape. At the same time, he foresees an important (secondary) role for sustainable molecules such as green hydrogen: as a storage medium, in mobility and as an industrial raw material. In this respect, the Lievense | WSP plan to realize a green hydrogen buffer between Rotterdam and Antwerp can be very valuable.

In an interview about the Lievense | WSP plan, Peter Molengraaf reflects on the future of the energy system and the possible role the green hydrogen buffer between Rotterdam and Antwerp can play. Watch a short video here, which clearly explains the core of Lievense I WSP's plan for hydrogen storage in pipelines.
